For information, call 860-439-ARTS (2787).

“Electra” is an ancient tragedy dealing with the events after the death of Agamemnon, king of Mycenae. Electra and her sister mourn their father, Agamemnon, 10 years after he was murdered, and are waiting for their brother, Orestes, to avenge the murder. The story follows Electra through stormy confrontations with the women of the house — her sister Chrysothemis, her mother Clytemnestra, and her mother’s lover, Aegisthus, the man who murdered her father. Finally, Orestes arrives to free his sisters and complete the mission Fate has decreed for him.

The adaptation by Hugo von Hofmannsthal forms the libretto for Richard Strauss' famous opera, “Electra,” and is considered one of the great symbolic adaptations of classical tragedy. Hofmannsthal was a vanguard of German symbolism and a renowned poet. His adaptation of “Jedermann” is still performed yearly at Max Reinhardt’s Salzburg Festival.

This play is directed by Connecticut College senior Ryan Metzler. The cast includes seniors Jeremy Make, Jeremy Moore and Becky Overholt; junior Alyson Gerber; sophomores Louise Hamill, Julia Kwolyk, Sarah McKitterick, Kate Michaud and Nicholas Roybal; and freshmen Christine Carter, Meridith Friedman and Julia Richards.

Ranked among the most selective private liberal arts colleges in the nation, Connecticut College enrolls 1,850 men and women from 44 states and 50 countries.
